The polar and sub-Antarctic waters of the Patagonian Sea are the most commonly used by adults of Grey-headed Albatross from the Islands of Southern Chile and South Georgia.

Data on adults from Diego Ramírez (67 trips) and Ildefonso (1 trip) in Chile, and South Georgia (55 trips recorded with satellite transmitters and 33 with geolocators). All available data between January and December are included, without distinguishing between seasons.

Dataholders: G. Robertson, J. Arata and C. Moreno (Diego Ramírez and Ildefonso Islands); J. Croxall, P. Trathan and R. Phillips (South Georgia).

During the breeding season adults of Grey-headed Albatross feed in sub-Antarctic and Antarctic polar waters of southern Chile, in the far south-west of the Patagonian Sea, and to small extent in deep waters on the margin of the Patagonian shelf slope.

Data on adults from the Chilean islands Diego Ramírez (67 trips) and Ildefonso (1 trip). Period: November-February.

Dataholders: G. Robertson, J. Arata and C. Moreno.

During the breeding season (spring and autumn), adults of Grey-headed Albatrosses from South Georgia feed principally in Antarctic polar waters.

Data on adults (55 trips) from South Georgia. Period: November-March.

Dataholders: J. Croxall, P. Trathan and R. Phillips.

Autumn-Winter (Ad., S. Georgia)

Nonbreeding adults of Grey-headed Albatrosses from South Georgia made intense use of Antarctic polar waters and sub-Antarctic waters of the Argentine Basin, to the east and north of the Malvinas Islands.

Data (recorded with geolocators) on 21 adults from South Georgia. Period: April-September.

Dataholders: J. Croxall, P. Trathan and R. Phillips.

Regional Nesting Sites: In the Patagonian Sea and areas of influence, this species breeds on the islands of southern Chile (Ildefonso and Diego Ramírez) and on South Georgia. Other, more distant, nesting sites are on the Prince Edward, Marion, Crozet, Kerguelen, Macquarie and Campbell islands.

Diet: Squid, crustaceans and, to a small extent, fish caught in surface waters.

World breeding population: Estimated at 250,000 breeding adults.

Conservation Status: Vulnerable (IUCN, 2008). In the last 30 years the world population has undergone a rapid decline, especially at South Georgia.

Main threats: Incidental mortality in longline fisheries.
