Regional Nesting Sites: In the Patagonian Sea and areas of influence, this species breeds on the islands of southern Chile (Ildefonso and Diego Ramírez) and on South Georgia. Other, more distant, nesting sites are on the Prince Edward, Marion, Crozet, Kerguelen, Macquarie and Campbell islands.
Diet: Squid, crustaceans and, to a small extent, fish caught in surface waters.
World breeding population: Estimated at 250,000 breeding adults.
Conservation Status: Vulnerable (IUCN, 2008). In the last 30 years the world population has undergone a rapid decline, especially at South Georgia.
Main threats: Incidental mortality in longline fisheries.
